November wasn't exactly a stellar month for The Bachelor franchise. First Brad Womack decided that he wasn't going to pick either DeAnna Pappas or Jenni Croft in the finale. That was great for generating buzz, but not so great for making the fans of The Bachelor feel very positively about the show's success at matchmaking.
And right after that news, one of the few relatively successful couples to come from the series – Byron Velvick and Mary Delgado, who met on the sixth season of The Bachelor had also just appeared on Brad Womack's season of The Bachelor – went through some very public rocky times when Mary was arrested for assaulting the former Bachelor.
The couple recently spoke about the incident and clarified what was behind the trouble between the two.
Perhaps because the two had made such a recent appearance on The Bachelor, the show which led to their engagement but not yet a wedding, some people made an assumption that Mary and Byron's fight was related to their as-yet unwed status.
“That's so far from the truth," Mary told Inside Edition. "It was a lot of things. It was something that just kind of got out of hand."
The two were actually watching The Bachelor: After the Final Rose at another couple's home. When their hosts began to get into an argument, Mary and Byron found themselves in the midst of a disagreement as well about whether or not to leave. The two then headed out to their vehicle, where the argument became even more heated, and that's where Mary struck Byron. He went inside to clean up, and at that point, he called the police.
Despite his call, he didn't actually intend for things to go as far as they did, with Mary being arrested and charged with battery. "I tried to stop [the police] when they were thinking about doing that. I was shocked, stunned and very concerned," he said.
As for Mary, the whole incident “was humiliating.”
“It's just indescribable," Mary said. "A lot of things go through your mind. From my mug shot you could see I cried nonstop."
"Just because you met on a reality show, got engaged on this beautiful incredible setting doesn't mean that we're Prince Charming or Beautiful Princess," Byron said. "It's nothing like that. It's just a real couple going through real things."
